How much TOEFL score do you need for university?
ETS does not set a pass score — each university sets its own minimum. Patterns exist. This guide reflects common admissions data and ETS 2026 updates.
Score requirements by institution type
| Institution | TOEFL 0–120 | 2026 band | CEFR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community college | 60–68 | 3.5 | B1+ |
| Typical university | 70–79 | 4 | B2 |
| Good graduate programs | 80–90 | 4.5 | B2+ |
| Selective / top-tier | 90–100+ | 5 | C1 |
| Highly competitive + funding | 100–114+ | 5.5–6 | C1–C2 |
Section minimums matter
Some programs require minimums per skill — e.g. total 90 but speaking below 22 = rejection.
Real applicant scenarios
MA applicant: often 85–95 total. Funded PhD: often 95–100+ with high section floors. Exchange: sometimes 70–79.
