History of the TOEFL

From 1960s paper tests to today's iBT — ETS has administered TOEFL throughout.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) launched in 1964 by the National Council and Modern Language Association (MLA) to measure international students for US admission. ETS has run it since 1965 and remains the sole official administrator.

Mental translation & word-by-word reading — triples cognitive load.

Suggested Prep Timeline

Based on CEFR level — personalize after a precise assessment.

  1. Week 1–2 Diagnostic + goal

Level assessment, target score, learn 4-section format

  2. Month 1–2 Skill foundation

Daily i+1 input · think in English · Speaking/Writing templates

  3. Month 2–4 Task-based practice

Progress Mock every 2–3 weeks · instructor feedback · fix weak points

  4. 2–4 weeks before Simulation Mock

Full timed exam · stress management · final polish

8-step learning pathway

Common Mistakes

Starting without level check

Enrolling before CEFR = wasted time and money.

Memorizing vocab only

TOEFL is analytical — text structure & tasks beat 5000 random words.

Practice without timer

Reading & Writing feel completely different under real timing.

Ignoring Speaking

Biggest score drop happens here — Integrated needs structured practice.
